Copper Rock

Government shear zone...

Geological Setting

The area is underlain by Wasekwan Group mafic volcanic rocks (see Fig. 1) that are intruded by mafic to intermediate plutons (Gilbert et al., 1980). The alteration zone is hosted by the newly delineated North Stear Lake Shear Zone (NSLSZ), which forms a prominent topographic and geophysical linear feature. The shear zone dips steeply north. The footwall of the shear zone consists of highly deformed, intercalated felsic volcanics and coarse-grained mafic volcanics/gabbro.

The presumed core of the shear zone is not exposed, covered by a 50m wide peat bog. The hangingwall of the shear zone is composed of highly sheared pillowed basalt and mafic breccias.

Mineralization

The mineralization consists of 1-10% finely disseminated pyrite within intensely sericitized and locally moderately silicified felsic phyllonite (sheared felsic volcanic). The alteration similar to felsic-hosted mineralization discovered in 2000 (Beaumont-Smith and Edwards, 2000), although the sericitization is more intense at this locality. The mineralization differs with pyrite, as opposed to arsenopyrite, as the sulphide mineral accompanying the alteration.

Geochemistry

Assay data pending.

Classification

Shear-hosted alteration/pyrite. Prospective Au target in newly delineated regional shear zone.

Appraisal

Intense alteration zone hosted by newly delineated D2 shear zone (NSLSZ) similar in style to alteration associated with gold mineralization characterizing highly sheared felsic volcanic rocks in the western Lynn Lake greenstone belt. Along strike (topographic and geophysical linear presumed to represent shear zone) from historic high-grade gold mineralization in the Irene Lake area (Location 2; Ferriera, 1993)
