Yes, not only Russia, but China too could take very prominent positions on the world stage if they so chose to work for the good of mankind. Too bad that we don't have really great statesmen from either country, at least AFAIK. You are very correct in noting that they both have significant leverage right now, since they start with a perception (in certain quarters) of being less biased than some of the western states. However, it is largely western values which they need to champion, so that advantage might well degrade with time, assuming either country actually worked to promote the good western values.
