Lanny Davis, former Clinton special counsel who famously attacked Kenneth Starr, was in Connecticut working for Lieberman when he got the lesson: “I held on to the view that the left was inherently more tolerant and less hateful than the right. Now, in the closing days of the Lieberman primary campaign, I have concluded that I was wrong.” A friend of his left the state, “fearful for his physical safety.”

“This is not your father’s Democratic Party,” wrote Michael Barone in The Wall Street Journal. That’s where articles by a score of other writers, scholars and pundits, who not long ago were understood to be classic liberals, had to go to get a sane hearing: Hitchens, Bernard Lewis, Michael Oren, William Shawcross. Such is the state of the debate and of the language.
