Almost. The labeling of a liberal republican such as McCain or Chaffee as such might appeal to traditional liberal voters, so the left calls them "moderate Republican" to limit the appeal. On the other hand labeling conservative and moderate democrats as "conservative democrats" makes them sound less dangerous to people who have traditional values.

It is just one of the labeling tricks the left uses to try to control the debate. One of the more egregious abuses of labeling was calling the fiscal liberal President Bush a conservative while labeling socialist Gore a moderate. It is like subliminal advertising and the old advertising saw "repeat anything enough and people will believe it."
