"Even though the deadline has expired, I don't think the Council is going to act tomorrow. I will need to be in touch with the players to find out how they intend to proceed," Mr Annan said. "And I am not sure that they are ready to take the kind of action you want," he said. "I will need further consolations with them." The Security Council adopted a resolution last month calling on Iran to halt uranium enrichment by August 31 or risk possible sanctions, amid fears in the West its nuclear program may be a cover for efforts to build the bomb. The so-called 5+1 - permanent Security Council members Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States plus Germany - have offered Iran a package of incentives in return for a nuclear freeze. Asked by reporters if he expected the international community to move towards imposing sanctions on Iran, Mr Annan said: "That is an issue in the hands of the Security Council. "Now that the deadline has passed I know that there were attempts being made to organise a meeting between Iran and the other six players. The meeting has not taken place yet." Mr Annan, on a regional tour largely focused on underpinning the UN-brokered cease-fire in Lebanon, left Jordan for Syria and is expected in Iran on Saturday.
