We should oppose all atrocities and clean up the ones we perpetrate as our top priority. We should never turn a blind eye to the larger canvas, but we should also never justify our atrocities by pointing to those of others.

Agreed. Unfortunately, no one has figured out how to clean up atrocities without running the risk of creating a few more in the process. This is largely the problem the USA faces in the ME (Israel too for that matter). We are not evil, unless you lump stupidity in with evil, which when coupled with the degree of pig headedness Bush exhibits, I sometimes am inclined to do.
