Kerry was a great American combat hero who won the Silver star, the Bronze Star, was wounded three times in action, led his men with valor and then went home and became a very effective peace-maker, after the Vietnam War had become completely insane and self-defeating to the country. Kerry deserves a medal for standing up to Nixon and the ultra rightwing war hawks just as he stood up to the Vietcong. Both groups were intent on doing our country grave damage, and did. Like Iraq, Vietnam was based on a big fat lie and also many misunderstandings and atrocious planning. Both were civil wars we were stuck in the middle of, and had no business being stuck in the middle of. Both wars were pusheed by greedy war profiteers like Halliburton for their own benefit. Both wars severely weakened the USA and should have been stopped very early on, but were dragged out because a chickenhawk Republican president didn't want to admit he was so wrong.
