Jews were not zionists in large numbers back then. But when the arabs started kicking them out and the west (particularly the US) wouldnt take them in, Israel became the only way to survive. Most jews in israel still are not zionists in the God gave this land to us religious camp--most are there because the forces of history put them there and 60 years later its the only home most of them know.
