European Central Bank hints at rate increase
By Aaron Siegel
September 1, 2006
An October hike in interest rates at the European Central Bank seems likely after the bank kept its refinancing rate steady at 3% yesterday, according to published reports.

"We are in a posture of strong vigilance today," Central Bank president Claude Trichet said a news conference following the meeting of the bank's governing council.

Those words are thought to hint at a probable increase when the bank next considers rates.
