The UCMJ may have changed, but it used to be that after being AWOL for a year, a person was presumed to have no intentions of returning to duty, and was reclassified as a deserter. If he'd gone AWOL under orders to return to Iraq, he'd be considered a deserter under fire, which used to be punishable by death.

Now that the MSM is following him, he'll probably be handled with kid gloves and be treated more leniently. Or, maybe his commander will be as disgusted by that picture as I am, and will throw the book at him. I hope it's the latter.
