Oh good.

There was a discussion on SI not too long ago-it arose over Gore's Inconvenient Truth. When charged with exaggeration or dramatization, he said something about how an issue needed to have the worst emphasised first, to get people to pay attention. I think this is true, and I imagine it was also true regarding women's rights.
If the traditional values are the best, then I believe we will work our way toward to a modern rendition of them.

We discussed a book called The Moral Animal years ago on SI. It made a lot of sense to me (although since then I've been told that whole field is outdated). What works, works. I can buy Jung and William's archetypal genetic programming, but I also believe in controlling, harnessing, adjusting it. And I think the values that have evolved through the years are valid, but not limited or sacrosanct and when life changes, we change with it.

So now we are down to traditional morality being a protection for the poor, since the wealthier have safety nets when they use bad judgment. Ok. That was partially the reasoning behind making abortion available to the poor as well as rich. They were the ones with the least resources to deal with unwanted pregnancies. We have provided all kinds of safety nets, but unfortunately what has happened is that people are happy to lie in the net and not get out and climb to try again.

You will get no argument from me, an old social worker, about the problems that arise from poor decisions among the poor. I've espoused some pretty dramatic actions about this, including removing children to fulltime care to break the cycle and culture of the hood, refusing multiple ADC claims, insisting on some form of work program. The future relies on our changing the present environment. Our current welfare entitlement mentality has created a huge dependent population. The NO Katrina underbelly that everyone gasped at should have surprised no one.

Now have I gone and changed the topic again?
