The attacks of 9/11/01 have their origins in the 1990/1991 war with Iraq and our presence in the Saudi Arabian holy land. Osama Bin Laden has even said as much, that it is our presence in their holy land that motivated him and his followers to carry out the attacks. Many of us warned that an incursion into the Middle East in 1990/1991 and continued presence would lead to blowback, and that's exactly what we saw on 9/11/01. We can thank decades of misguided energy and foreign affairs policies that put us in the Middle East on the holy land and drew the ire of muslim extremists like Osama Bin Laden. And yes, terrorism is overblown. When you step out of your door every morning, the biggest threat to your ongoing existence in America is not terrorism (not even close). Your life is far more threatened by street criminals, unsafe highways, unsafe drivers, etc. The more mundane causes of death that do not cause the huge media blitz and fear that terrorist attacks cause. Statistically you are more likely to die from driving on unsafe roads, walking on unsafe streets, flooding/storms than terrorism, so why are people so afraid of terrorism? It is an irrational media/government driven fear. To make our lives safer the government should address the more mundane threats first.
