<Naïve observers like Maurice bought into the Reagan PR, >

Yeah? What did I buy into? I disagreed with most of it - such as the harassment of Gorby. It took years for Gorby to be recognized as other than your olde-style Russian totalitarian. The USA including Raygun, was supporting Osama against Gorby. Well done chaps! Look where that effort led.

You will still see silly people saying how Raygun defeated the USSR whereas it simply internally collapsed in ideological and power conflicts.

Raygun was even reluctant to support good old Maggie against Argentina, despite NATO commitments. An attack on a NATO member was supposed to result in a NATO defence, I thought - apparently not. Maybe that was just an anti-Warsaw Pact commitment.

As an outside observer at the time (I first visited the US in 1990) I was always amazed that Reagan was impeached for the whole set of dealings with Iran.
