Compared to "dividends"? lol

Stocks going down move faster than stocks going up. Try it sometime. Cash isn't close. I say keep the original rules and quit tweaking it.

Shorting in this game looks like just a negative number of shares except ...

that you have to change the "sign" or take the Absolute Value of a position
and
add the mark to market gain or loss to have the portfolio total add right

I prefer the original/latest rules, but if someone does the work for Elroy and a short position gets charged for dividends, then it's OK with me.
