The Dems began losing with Johnson and his civil rights initiatives (the Repugnicans adopted all the racists) and Vietnam war, then came Jimmy Carter.

Nixon had left the economy in pretty sorry shape, never having paid for the Vietnam war, and Carter started trying to pay it down. The Iranians took our hostages, and Carter was helpless. Inflation ate any wage gains, and people felt their lives were hopeless, which Carter dealt with by telling us our days as top dog were over. A truly depressing President.

Carter was responsible for millions of working Dems defecting to Reagan to become "Reagan Democrats".
