Gates understood that the software was where the lock was. How did he know this? Not sure.

Maybe. But I think he just knew that IBM was willing to pay him for an operating system. He found one (that IBM guys messed up buying). Bought it and resold it to IBM. Then the money started rolling in and certain things dawned on him.

I think he would not hesitate to screw pretty much anyone who got in his way, as long as it was legal.

It seems pretty clear that he won the battle with Apple due to peculiarities of the computer business rather than quality.

I don't think he did at the time. He went to IBM's meeting with the intention of selling them the OS, fully expecting that he could make a couple of million. IBM didn't expect the little PC to become a success, so they wanted to license the OS rather than squander a couple of million on a dubious venture at best. Gates had a fortune handed to him due to their ineptitude.

Gates is that he seemed to understand simple business concepts at a time when most in the tech industry did not. Doesn't make him a genius

Lizzie,

A genius is a person who sees the obvious that everyone else cannot or will not.

So like it or not, he is a genius.

(and besides his charitable efforts that will probably be the only positive thing I can say about the guy )
