I think it was NASD that bought AMEX, but AMEX was kept separate. Then there was an attempt to sell AMEX to a private group called GTCR, but I do not recall that deal closing.

I do know that the stock tables in the WSJ and most papers in the United States show NYSE, Nasdaq, and AMEX. And then online there is OTCBB and Pink Sheets (or Pinko Sheets).

If you "search" AMEX GTCR
you get 2003 news so I think the deal may never have closed.
