>WASHINGTON, Aug 31 (IPS) - The aggressive new campaign by the administration of President George W. Bush to depict U.S. foes in the Middle East as "fascists" and its domestic critics as "appeasers" owes a great deal to steadily intensifying efforts by the right-wing press over the past several months to draw the same comparison.

Several months? Daniel Pipes has been using the term for at least four years now.

Yeah, but it didn't reach a critical mass until the last few months. Interestingly enough, the press and most everyone else picks up pretty quickly when Rove changes direction and the GOP cranks up a new campaign to win the hearts and minds of America.
