I think the seeds were already sown before the Cold War

The original seeds go back to the dawn of civilization. This area was the cradle. Empires came and went forever. Until the last one, the Ottomans, went down in WW1. Lots of memories haven't died out. I'm surprised Rome hasn't raised another army to try for it all :>)
