re: "Now there is a good example of the power of the net. From pictures on a map to a GPS location service to a question on musical melody recognition followed by an answer. Two people sharing information from two countries; all done in less than twenty minutes. Wow!"

Agreed, Sailtrader. I'd have hoped that you would expand on this observation. Perhaps you still may?

I've come to expect such responses from various fora on the Internet, as, hopefully, many others here have, too. It's probably worth mentioning - or, questioning, as the case may be - the value of "community" in the facilitation of these processes, which is not the same as examining the effects of intimacy, which suggests a closer knowledge that neighbors have of one another in the fabric of physical or virtual connectedness that binds community members together. Internet communities, however, are often comprised of members who are entirely anonymous to one another, which makes the matter all the more intriguing ;)

Sailtrader, I agree with your sentiments to the max.

It probably sounds naïve, but I'm always amazed by the relative ease with which one can access information from experts in their fields. Frank's forum has been a fine example, among many.

Twenty years ago, if one wanted insight into some esoteric technology, it didn't come easy.

Today, I have young nephews who take instantaneous access to all kinds of information for granted.

Back in the sixties and seventies, Marshall McLuhan spoke of the Global Village. If there is such a thing, or if it's yet to come, its visible consciousness would be the Internet.
