I have never been the champion of either China or Vietnam -- although both ahve accomplished things worth noting. Both are free from foreign domination. Both have communist governments, although in the case of China the behavior of the government is closer to what would be expected under state-sponsored capitalism. Both have histories replete with atrocities against civilians and human rights abuses. both hope for a future better than the past. Both have economies that are gathering strength -- and in the case of China their economy is at risk of too much growth. Both countries will decide their own futures. And in both countries we can play a positive role by developing closer relations.
