I forget the stages of the fall of every civilization but we are at the apathy stage and will soon go the way of Rome. Not soon in terms of days or weeks, but soon. We insist that the 2 parties who stand for re-election keep giving us as much as they can from the public coffers. We refuse to allow the SSI time bomb to be touched. Etc, etc, etc. We have the government we deserve and a good share of us obviously have our heads buried or are doing the same as them, hoping we die before the bill comes due.
