There are some brokerage products that can have principle insured. Growth would be less but it may be worth it. Another way is to invest in portfolios based on ones age that invest more conservatively as you get older automatically. I would also want to classify risky investments as such and limit exposure in these. Same with sector funds.
I still maintain that the average guy regardless of education for the most part has not done well in 401k investing. Folks are clamoring for advice in what to invest in in ones own 401k. Thats both good and bad as it prevents stupid investing by novices but also opens the field to a whole host of potential charlatans posing as advisors. When it comes to money, the mattress may still be the only really safe place. (g)
PS I owned wcom and jdsu so i feel the pain too.
