I agree with you that utility grid supplied power will be with us for quite some time. As I suggested, I think change will be evolutionary over decades as central generation costs increase and decentralized generation costs decrease.

However, the cost factors could easily change if, for example, new superconducting technologies allow large amounts of power to be transmitted over relatively small transmission lines and safe fusion reactors permit cheap generation of such power.

One thing for sure: the future ain't gonna be what we think it will be...
