So, who is to blame for Dan Rather's willingness to lie?

Dan Rather lied? I don't think so. He was in such a hurry to break his story he did not check out his supporting documents and sources carefully enough. That's not lying....that's a screw up. And he pretty much gave Bush the election.

Which rightwinger are you blaming for the NYTimes traitorous articles?

That's funny. When did telling the truth become traitorous? You really need to read up on what it means to be a democracy ......its not secret meetings or lying to the public because you think your goals are far more important then telling the truth to the public.

Ted, you again miss the point. I am responsible for my actions. You are responsible for your actions. For a person to assign blame for their actions on anyone else it is an admission that they have yet to achieve emotional adulthood.

This has little to do with self responsibility and more to do with boundaries and civility. At some point in time, the spokespeople for the right began to take on a more aggressive style when speaking and interacting. I am not sure when that happened but I began to experience it after the 2000 presidential election. Frankly, I was shocked at their attitude. Listening to a Coulter or a Rush or a Hannity, you would think their real enemies are the people who don't vote a straight GOP ticket. And apparently, the rightwingers posting on SI took their cues from those GOP pundits because many of them interact in a similar fashion.

Three years ago, nearly every person who was moderate or left on this thread tried to deal civilly with other posters. Over time, that began to change, reflecting their experience with rightwing posters. What's interesting is that's a big issue for you. For me, its just the tip of a much bigger iceberg....I really question whether this country can stay together. The last few years have made very clear that this country has very divergent views on democracy, war, politics, national goals, New Orleans........you name it, we're disagree about it. The rancor and hate generated by the right has made it virtually impossible to ignore these divisions. At one point, the left was willing to work with the right for the sake of the country. I suspect that is no longer true.
