A single payer system would be neutral - that is, it affects every company and every person equally because everyone pays. GM, Wal-Mart, the corner jewelry store, the guy fixing your car... everyone gets a hit - and coverage. Right now those with coverage are subsidizing in one shape or form the costs of those without coverage.

Since the government already provides health insurance for a big chunk of the population... armed forces personel, government employees at the state, federal and local level and medicare subscribers... it's not that big a leap to cover everyone.
