50k in gold could last you a long time if you use it to buy productive capital equipment for pennies on the dollar during a depression. You would be able to produce at a low cost basis, and give employment to those in more desperate circumstances than yourself. Very few have enough cash to survive a deflationary depression without working. The objective of those with cash should be to acquire assets when they are on sale, in order to ensure that they are put to productive use at a cost basis that reflects the new reality.

be ready to work for 25% of current salary, be ready to work 50% more time than today and be ready to survive on 50% of food consumption..
..Be ready to live with four other guys in a 2 bed room apartment, use public transportation etc

You are not talking about a depression, you are talking about starvation, systemic collapse and destruction of 90% of wealth.

And gold is as likely to be confiscated as well as stolen.
