Attorneys General fly in commercial airplanes. Janet Reno did. John Ashcroft did. That is, he did up until July 2001. When asked why Ashcroft had suddenly started flying in leased private jets, an FBI spokesman said, “There was a threat assessment and there are guidelines. He is acting under the guidelines.” The FBI, the Justice Department, and Ashcroft himself all refused to say what the threat was. Source: CBS News. 2. The FAA refused to let author Salman Rushdie fly in North America starting the week before 9/11. From the Times of London: “On September 3 the Federal Aviation Authority made an emergency ruling to prevent Mr Rushdie from flying unless airlines complied with strict and costly security measures. Mr Rushdie told The Times that the airlines would not upgrade their security.” The FAA confirmed that it had banned Rushdie from flying in the US and Canada but refused to say why. The author himself--who is famously hated by Muslims for his novel The Satanic Verses--says he believes the authorities knew the attack was coming. 3. Four days before the attacks, Florida Governor Jeb Bush activated the National Guard, citing “acts of terrorism” On September 7, 2001, President Bush’s brother called up Florida’s National Guard in order to help handle “civil disturbance” and “acts of terrorism.” Source: Official Website for the Florida Governor's Office. 4. On September 10, 2001, high-ranking Pentagon officials cancelled travel plans for the morning of September 11. From Newsweek: “On Sept. 10, Newsweek has learned, a group of top Pentagon officials suddenly canceled travel plans for the next morning, apparently because of security concerns.” 5. On September 10, 2001, San Francisco’s mayor was warned against flying to New York the next morning. Around 10:00 PM on September 10--not exactly business hours--San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown was advised to use extreme caution if flying the next morning to New York City. Brown refuses to say exactly who gave him the prescient warning, citing only “my security people at the airport.” Source: San Francisco Chronicle. 6. CIA Director George Tenet warned Congressmen of “an imminent attack on the United States of this nature.” From National Public Radio’s on-the-scene reporting during the attacks: “I spoke with Congressman Ike Skelton—a Democrat from Missouri and a member of the Armed Services Committee—who said that just recently the Director of the CIA warned that there could be an attack—an imminent attack—on the United States of this nature. So this is not entirely unexpected.” (You can hear this clip at my Website.) You’ll notice that every one of these indicators comes from mainstream reporting. No “conspiracy theorists.” No “suspect” Websites or wild rumors. Just the ugly facts from some of the bastions of mainstream media: CBS, Newsweek, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Times of London, and NPR, as well as the State of Florida’s Website. Still think the authorities didn’t know what was coming? _______________________________________ References: John Ashcroft. Stewart, Jim “Ashcroft Flying High.” CBS News, 25 July 2001.
