Aren't free markets great? Part of the issue is that they don't WANT anyone to know what the real costs are.

I've had a $30K hospital bill settled for $6K by the insurance company and another one for $50K settled for $8K. How could the possibly do this if their real costs were their billed costs?

They are forced to try to get you subsidize the patients they treat at a loss or even for nothing thanks to government mandates and policies. If they can't do this, they go out of business and you get no care.
