If a crime is committed against you, and if you commit acts of violence against the family of the person who you believe to be guilty, then I would dearly hope that you would be arrested, tried, convicted and that you would spend the rest of your worthless life rotting in jail as a common criminal.

That's called deterrence GST.. And when you undermine the concept and credibility of deterrence, you encourage aggression.

Hawk, when is the US is going to invade Iran? After all, Iran is developing WMD. Maybe the insurgent in Iraq are acting as deterrent for a US invasion. The US did not anticipate a revolt from the Iraqi population nor that it would stay in Iraq more than 4 years. What is your take?
Edited - Have you heard that NATO is asking for more troops to oust the Talibans?

massive retaliation

Yep, like the massive retaliation against the perpetrators of 911 currently enjoying the hospitality of our ally the military dictator of Pakistan.

Bush retaliated unmassively and rather flaccidly.
