The National government exists in certain regions under military control and other forces, which are not unified, control everything else. ... all of it wrought with corruption. Yep.. the Pakistani "badlands".. But there are still "carrots and sticks" that can be applied.. The biggest problem is going to be reaching out to the young people with an alternative ideology before the majority of them are brainwashed in the Madrassas and become a generation lost to the Jihadist movement. I also fear that it might be too late and that we're going to be facing ever-increasing numbers of them in coming years.. And I don't say this just because the US is in Afghanistan or Iraq... it's more a matter of demographics. Given that much of the Islamic world is rather youthful, it's inevitable that young impressionable youths would fall prey to the charismatic fanatic religious scholars recruiting them for Jihad. As for corruption? Welcome to the Muslim world where kidnapping for ransom is a cultural pastime. It existed long before Islam appeared, and it will exist for hundreds of years to come.. At least until the Muslim world recognizes that without a government accountable to, and elected by, the people it is governing, the lust for power (political, military, or religious) will dominate their lives.I don't have a good feeling about how things are going... And what it be like if we'd never bothered to retaliate against Al Qai'da and their Taliban hosts in Afghanistan? Can anyone think that the Taliban would have grown weaker? We're between a rock and a hard place in this war against Militant Islam. Either we fight it now, graduating the intensity of our effort as required, or wait until the provocation to our nation is sufficient to ensure the American people never again entertain doubts as to the worthiness of the cause for which we're fighting.. It's always been my view that if we didn't act pro-actively to disrupt the Islamo-Fascist movement in the Muslim world, it was going to continue to intimidate every regime in the region and bring those regimes into Al Qai'da sphere of influence (support us and we won't assassinate, or overthrow, you). And then it's very doubtful that anything less than a full mobilization of our armed forces, and those of our allies, could prevent their push to restore the Caliphate. Hawk
