dr228 - those 2G awards for past use were because of E spinning off the handset biz to Sony Ericsson. It made it very easy for E to pay very little for all their past use (and S/E to pay royalty going forward through 2006), and trigger Nokia and Samsung via a contract clause. If there was no handset spinoff E would have taken it through the end, having already removed several of IDCC's patent claims, which would have reduced amount owed, or even possibly ended up like MOT (remember that Nokia didn't think IDCC would win against E). E became a "company of integrity" because it allowed IDCC to collect from Nokia through the contract...keeping IDCC's claims to 2G, with very little downside to E. Samsung tied themselves to Nokia, thus the latest award for 2G past use. Remember the IDCC announcement with E? Spent little time on the E part, but shouted to the world about Nokia and Samsung obligations because of the E deal?

With IDCC's GSM patent claims and monies going away at the end of this year, and delays (low visibility) in 3G licensing... means analysts can be all over the map. IMO, the 3G patent litigation with Nokia will hold things up with others unless the company cuts more LG type deals (where would the stock be without that sweet deal?). Those type deals with the possibility to happen at any time keeps things interesting for sure!
