Marty, have you ever heard of a nutraceutical called Ambrotose? It is produced by a company called Mannatech (MTEX).

You may recall that my nephew, Mario, suffered TBI about 4 years ago, when he drove his car into a light pole. I was with my sister, her husband, Mario and my parents at a barbershop quartet event in Walnut Creek last Saturday night. Mario uses a wheel chair when attending events (although his locomotion skills are improving all the time). He is very alert, but his eyes don't focus well, he is sorta child-like (in a very charming way -- everyone loves him) in behavior, and he cannot yet speak (he's learning to use a vocalizing computer to assist him in communication, but he lacks the vocal coordination needed for understandable speech).

So as my sister was leaving the event at intermission (my Dad's the barbershop quartet enthusiast -- I stayed with him for the second half, but the other family members had maxed out by the intermission), this older guy approaches me, saying how touched he is by Mario's situation, and asks if he can send me some information about a miracle nutraceutical that cured his wife's cervical cancer and his own prostate cancer, and that just may help Mario. It sounds like snake oil, but I was intrigued and still am. The guy phoned me at the office today and told me, at length, about a bunch of miracle cures, and he got into the science behind the nutraceutical, which focuses upon 8 essential sugars that play a key role in what gets into and out of a cell through the cellular membrane. Only at the very end of his pitch did he disclose that he happens to be an "associate" of Mannatech, which has an Amway-like salesforce.

The guy had a ton of conviction and he seemed very sincere. How can you not trust a guy who tells you about the surgery on his excruciatingly painful anal fissures (he said Ambrotose helped him recover rapidly and with so little pain that his doctor was just amazed)? But maybe he's just be a very skilled con artist.

I see that Forbes last week included Mannatech in its list of the 10 best small companies in America.

So maybe this isn't another SafeScience or Shaman Pharmaceuticals story. But twice burned, thrice shy (I'm a little slower than most to learn from experience). I know that you follow nutraceuticals, Marty. Any thoughts about either MTEX or their Ambrotose product? If anyone else on this thread has thoughts on this, I'd love to hear or read them.

Cheers,

Marc
