You need to look at what correlates.

Just because people find common cause doesn't mean that they are soulmates. People often have different reasons for supporting causes. And people who are philosophically attuned often find themselves on different sides of an issue. Sometimes the hierarchical order of principles or values just differs. You have to look deeper than correlation.

Any political faction is likely to be somewhat more skeptical of scientific findings that help the other side of the political battle and hurt their side. Libertarians are no exception to this rule, but they also aren't particularly prone to this weakness, their just human like anyone else.
