Go and ask him.

To be able to go to Cuba without violating American laws, first go to a Caribbean country and from there get to Cuba. Tell the Cubans you are an American and they will not stamp your passport at all. Return to the US in the reverse way and your fellow Americans will be none the wiser and they will not put you in the slammer!
