RE: "My personal opinion is that it defies common sense that the only person in the chain of command that could give that order is the president. Someone can correct me if I am wrong."

I don't know if you're wrong or not, but there seems to be two schools of thought on the shoot down order deal. I've seen a few write ups claiming that prior to July 2001, NORAD commanders had the authority to make the call, but supposedly that authority was shifted to Rumsfeld, then shifted back after the attacks.

I don't recall that claim ever having been referenced to an authoritative source, so I don't know if that's the straight goods, or an urban legend.

There is no doubt however, that the President is the Commander in Chief of the military. It is inconceivable that having been notified, "America is under attack.", he would sit around like a dummy and do nothing.

Of course, the whole shoot down order deal is moot considering the official story is there was nothing around to shoot anything down with anyhow.

The standing order concerning the shooting down of hijacked aircraft was altered on June 1, 2001. Instead of Field Commanders making the call, the order could come only from the Secy of Defense or the President.

Man, that's some bad luck timing, huh? But they fixed it. Not long after 911, that order was rescinded.

Another amazing coincidence of 9/11.
