Apparently someone "gave a sh*t" about them.

Somebody did. Unocal.

BTW, you misspelled shit.

US Policy On Taliban Influenced
By Oil Deal Negotiations

The two claim that the US government's main objective in Afghanistan was to consolidate the position of the Taliban regime to obtain access to the oil and gas reserves in Central Asia.

They affirm that until August (2001-my edit), the US government saw the Taliban regime "as a source of stability in Central Asia that would enable the construction of an oil pipeline across Central Asia" from the rich oilfields in Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan, through Afghanistan and Pakistan, to the Indian Ocean. Until now, says the book, "the oil and gas reserves of Central Asia have been controlled by Russia. The Bush government wanted to change all that."

But, confronted with Taliban's refusal to accept US conditions, "this rationale of energy security changed into a military one", the authors claim.

"At one moment during the negotiations, the US representatives told the Taliban, 'either you accept our offer of a carpet of gold, or we bury you under a carpet of bombs,'" Brisard said in an interview in Paris.

Apparently someone "gave a sh*t" about them, or they wouldn't have tried to exploit their chaos and impose a repressive/regressive government upon them and use their country as a terrorist sanctuary from which to carry out their attacks upon the world.
You are absolutely correct, the US gave a Sh1t and financed AQ and OBL to fight the Soviets.
Don't try and feed us that line of Bullsh*t!! YOU CLEARLY DON'T GIVE A SH*T ABOUT TRYING TO CREATE A FOUNDATION FOR DEMOCRACY IN THE MUSLIM WORLD, LET ALONE AFGHANISTAN.

You've NEVER advocated democratic reform, let alone offer any kind of alternatives that would reform the militant Jihadist trends that are spreading throughout the region. SO DON'T TRY AND CONVINCE US THAT YOU ACTUAL CARE ABOUT WHETHER AFGHANISTAN HAS DEMOCRACY OR NOT. BECAUSE YOU DON'T CARE!!

I did offer an alternative, however, you can not impose western democracy on the Muslim world. The democracy has to come from within to accommodate customs and culture. You can help, but not forcing your own views of democracy. Look how Lebanon democracy is. It still needs some tweaking but it is there. It could be adopted and modified to suit. BUT YOU CAN NOT IMPOSE WESTERN DEMOCRACY, it will not work.
The democratic reforms trying to be implemented in Afghanistan are not perfect, nor are they likely to EVER equate to the kinds of human values that are expected from those in the West. That's just the reality of the situation. The region is flush with brutal and repressive powers that are not going to submit or subjugate themselves to a central authority until they are "encouraged" to do so (with carrots or sticks).
"(with carrots or sticks)" and patience not guns and killing. It will take decades rather than years. But what do I know? The overpaid think tanks in Washington know better. ;)
