If it IS TRUE, one could speculate (a Social Science/Science term) that it is because such folks look at the big and small picture and think about things carefully in contrast to many Americans.

I'm not sure why things started that way. Once the bias is in place it is to a certain extent self-perpetuating.

I can think of some reasons that might have contributed to the bias, but I'm not sure they would be sufficient to explain it.
