That should get them some attention and maybe more circulation and at least clicks. I gave them a few clicks.

So, it worked for them = improved business. They certainly didn't do it to cut their readership and advertising revenue.

Which is not to say I totally disagree with the idea. Just that it doesn't need to come to that.
