Look at any video. You'll see bits begin to fall before the building begins to move. In that still photo the time is several seconds after the collapse begins. Those bits are ahead of the pack because they left first. 32 ft/s/s. That's the rate of g. With only a second separating m1 from m2, v1 will be double v2.

I've been doing come searches on the concrete in the WTC since there seems to be doubt by some that the concrete could break into mostly small pieces. The answer seems to be that the bulk of the concrete in the WTC1 & 2 at least was poured over the floor trusses to make a level floor. This was essentially broad, thin, and flat streches of concrete which were easily smashed.

The other main source of concrete was for the walls of stairwells. This concrete held together in larger chunks. I believe there were even a half dozen or so people who survived in an uncrushed section of stairwell.

The columns were all steel covered with fireproofing, but not concrete.
