Candidate shot dead in Novi Pazar (Muslim city in Serbia) B92 ^ \| September 10, 2006 b92.net 10 September 2006 \| 17:38 \| Source: B92, Beta NOVI PAZAR, BELGRADE -- List for Sandžak candidate Ruždija Durovic has been killed in a shootout at the polling station in Novi Pazar. B92 has learned that his brother, Sulejman Durovic, was injured in the serious incident that occurred around 4:40 p.m. at the polling station number 74. Today local elections are held in Novi Pazar, Sjenica, Žitište and Blace. The municipal elections are taking place after the government introduced temporary measures last spring. A tense atmpsphere was expected in Sandžak. Sulejman Ugljanin’s SDA is supported by DSS and New Serbia, while Rasim Ljajic’s SDP has been backed by G17 Plus and the Democrats. Ten parties and coalitions will compete for 47 seats in Novi Pazar’s municipal assembly. 69,0199 voters are eligible to cast their ballots at 89 polling stations. The municipality of Sjenica has 25,107 registered voters, who will choose between 11 party and coalition candidates running for 39 municipal assembly seats. Žitište’s 16,100 voters will choose 31 municipal assembly deputies from between 306 candidates running on 15 different tickets, including 10 political parties and five groups of citizens. Lastly, 11,000 voters are eligible to elect Blace municipality’s new assembly. The 29 seats are competed for by candidates running on 12 electoral lists.
