ABC's Path to Fiction By Rob Reiner* huffingtonpost.com 09.09.2006 In a time of unlimited news access through twenty four hour cable television and the internet, it's understandable that--at times--the line between fiction and non-fiction can become a bit blurred. Today's real life events can sometimes seem like they came out of a Hollywood production company. This is why it's so important for the major networks and news organizations to fully understand the difference between what is real and what is entertainment. It is irresponsible for a major news network such as ABC to knowingly blur these lines. With the fifth anniversary of 9/11 upon us, ABC is scheduled to air a miniseries called "Path to 9/11." The producers of this "docudrama" claim to have based it the 9/11 Commission Report. No sooner does ABC start airing promos that we hear the reports that entire scenes and sequences are completely fabricated for the sole purpose of "enhancing the dramatic effect" of the miniseries. Is ABC trying to say that 9/11 wasn't dramatic enough? That they have to add dramatic scenes to this already horrific event? Are they serious? Then we find out that these "added dramatic scenes" all happen to read out of Karl Rove's playbook--pointing the blame of the 9/11 attacks at President Clinton and his cabinet members. ABC along with everyone who had anything to do with the production should be ashamed of themselves. I think we all can agree that it's in everybody's best interests for the Republicans to be searching out the perpetrators who were complicit in the 9/11 attacks, rather than spending time actively trying to set the blame on the previous administration. ABC should cancel "Path to 9/11" and replace it with something more tasteful. "Desperate Housewives" perhaps? It's become apparent that it ain't just the housewives that have become desperate. ______________________________________________________________ *Rob Reiner has directed some of the most popular and influential motion pictures of the past two decades.
