In a Pivotal Year, GOP Plans to Get Personal Millions to Go to Digging Up Dirt on Democrats From a purely, narrowly political point of view, and that's the way this administration and incarnation of the Rep Party plays it, this one is shrewd. If you are losing on all the issues at the national level and can only mount defensive responses to debates that focus there, then attacking the personal character of opponents is your only bet. Very bad for the political system. But that's where we are these days.
