It was reported that his plane was not downed by anti-aircraft fire. How they determined that, I don't know. Maybe from voice communications with squadron mates?, eye-witness accounts?, and blackbox voice recordings & etc??? Did you know that planes in a squadron in WW2 generally flew in a rather close but safe formation together in order to be better able to deal with hostile fighters. MInd you that was in WW2! Probably that doesn't apply to jet fighters of today which are faster and more maneuverable.

If you must have the definitive answer, maybe you would like to research it.
