Gulf quake felt from La. to Fla.

Sep 11, 2006 10:35 AM

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - The US Geological Survey says a strong magnitude six-point-oh earthquake in the Gulf of Mexico today sent shockwaves from Louisiana to southwest Florida, but no damage was reported.

The agency says the earthquake was centered about 260 miles southwest of Tampa but was too small to trigger tsunami danger.

The USGS received almost 16-hundred reports from people as far away as North Carolina who felt the 9:56 am CDT temblor.

A spokesman for the state emergency operations center says Florida counties along the gulf called with reports of tremors, but no significant damage was reported.

The epicenter is an unusual location for earthquake activity, but scientists recorded a magnitude 5-point-two temblor in the same location on February 10th.
