Elmer, I believe Intel had an alternative x86 instruction set but MicroSoft refused to support it. That was the payoff for Jerry's testimony in the anti trust trial.

The first part is a little far-fetched, unless Intel's "alternative x86 ISA" was just a clone of AMD's with different opcodes.

The second part, though, is probably true given Jerry's obvious kiss-ass efforts during his testimony.
