A fatwa stating this, issued by an Islamic court in Uttar Pradesh had raised fresh controversies. This fatwa had come from Darul Uloom of Deoband, the supreme body of majority Sunnis. According to fatwa, gambling and income through interest are both prohibited in Islam; and life insurance has both these aspects. Fatwa number 837, the latest diktat from the Darul Aloom of Deoband, tells all Sunni Muslims that life insurance be disallowed for the community, just like interest earned from banks. “Fatwa had rightly stated that insurance of life is against Shariyat (Islamic laws). No true Muslim should go for it, because Islam prohibits gambling and earning through interest; and insurance is nothing less than gambling,” said Khalid Rashid, Vice-President, All India Muslim Personal Law Board and Sunni religious leader. The rather unexpected ruling from the community's supreme body came after one - Saleem Chisti of Lucknow - sought a clarification on insuring his life. But the impracticality of the fatwa is however not lost on members of the Muslim Personal Law Board. “Insurance is illegal under Islam; but if it is necessary, then donate the interest earned,” said Dr. Rukhsana Lari, Member, All India Muslim Personal Law Board. But the controversial fatwa fails to find unanimous support within the Muslim community. “In Shias, there is no such ban. This controversy has been raised for the first time; it has no big meaning for Shias. In Iran, there is no such ban on getting life insured,” said Kalbe Javwad, a prominent Shia leader. Controversy is hardly new for Deoband. But at a time when securing oneself and one’s family has come to become a necessity, fatwa number 837 is only likely to add to the confusion.
