Although the industry has seen some 12-inch fabs come online in 2006, most DRAM makers did not start building their 12-inch fabs this year until they were certain that the DRAM market would remain bullish, Kau said. While output from 12-inch fabs will increase significantly in 2007, DRAM supply will still be tight because about 40% of the current 8-inch fabs will be phased out, he indicated. With Microsoft's Windows Vista beginning to boost demand towards the end of this year, and with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 40-50% for DRAM demand, the DRAM market will remain strong through 2008, the Inotera president remarked. Because of the optimistic outlook for the DRAM market, Kau said Inotera will hold its board of directors' meeting this month to advance the passage of a budget for capacity increase at its 12-inch Fab 2. According to the company's previous revelations, equipment installation at Inotera's Fab 2 is expected to begin in November this year, and test runs will be conducted in the first and second quarters of 2007. By the end of 2007, Inotera's total capacity from Fab 1 and Fab 2 will be 92,000 12-inch wafers monthly.
