The political thread junkies occupy their little corner of SI, but have no discernible impact outside. I have never seen a hardcore political threader (which I define as the oddballs who use a stock site solely for political posts) on the top peoplemark or subjectmark list.

Lots of sound and fury, signifying nothing, really. As you said once, most political posting on SI is just self-serving emotional indulgence. The audience they reach pretty much fits in a phone booth most of the time.

Frequent participation in political debate is likely to increase ignores even if you are not unpleasant. Most of the accounts that I've seen that have a lot of posts but very few ignores either stick to stock talking (and are reasonably pleasant when they posts about stocks) or mild "coffee-shop" chit-chat.
