None of this makes much sense. Why would Dell fear Intel becoming the next Microsoft now, when AMD is healthier than it has been in years? And why will performance not sell when Vista is just around the corner?

The simpler explanation is that AMD can now provide huge numbers of chips at very low prices, and have increased public awareness of their products to a level that will guarantee significant demand. Moving all desktops to a single socket and adopting DDR2 also simplified the transition to AMD products.
